Why Choose Dawa
Traveling in China can be complex. Here's how I solve the problems that trip planners and apps can't handle.
Erlangjian is the easy ticketed entry where every bus dumps people for 30-min photos—skip it. I'll drive you along the quieter southern lakeshore where Tibetan herders pitch summer tents and there's no gate. Arrive 6 AM for sunrise where the lake turns rose against snow-capped Riyue Mountain, then a private grassland spot where a local Tibetan family pours fresh dri-milk butter tea—the sacred Tso Ngonpo the way pilgrims experience it.
Mojia Street caters to tour buses—noodles pre-pulled, spice dialed down. Real Xining eating happens in the Hui alleys around Dongguan Mosque, where breakfast is steamed beef-broth dumplings and hand-pulled lamian snapped to length on the spot. For Amdo Tibetan flavors, a private home meal with a local family in the foothills—real tsampa, homemade yogurt, butter tea churned not poured from a bag.
Kumbum's standard route herds visitors through three halls in 90 minutes—you barely smell the yak butter lamps. We arrive 7:30 AM for morning chanting in the Grand Hall of Meditation, when the courtyard is quiet and pilgrims do three-step prostrations. Then a private butter-sculpture artisan workshop. To go deeper, the smaller Youning Monastery in surrounding mountains where Mongolian and Tibetan traditions blend.
June–September only—the lake ices over in winter. 5–7 days is the sweet spot. Day 1 Xining (2,275 m) acclimatization—Dongguan alleys, food, no exertion. Day 2 Kumbum, drive over Sun Moon Mountain Pass (3,520 m) to the southern Qinghai Lake shore for a Tibetan-style guesthouse. Day 3 Chaka Salt Lake sunrise. Days 4–7 extend into the Qinghai-Gansu loop or Amdo grasslands. Mid-July is rapeseed-and-turquoise peak.
